The Hummingbird Center is located outside of Iquitos, Peru, near kilometer 14 on the Iquitos-Nauta highway. At 2.6 kilometers off the main road, our location offers a quite, peaceful environment removed from the noise and distractions of modern jungle-town life. The center is an oasis of tranquility, full of the sounds of jungle wildlife such as the screech of hawks, the lively prattle of 15-20 parrots flying overhead, or the gentle whirring of hummingbird wings. Nights are filled with the sounds frogs singing their joy of life, owls trilling for their mates, and the ubiquitos symphony of hundreds of differe nt types of insects. These beautiful jungle night-noises are a wonderful accompaniament to the icaros sung during an ayahuasca ceremony.
Occasionally we are visited by large iguanas and monkeys, most frequently seen in the trees across the pond while lounging on the porch in our comfortable rocking chairs.
All registered guests will be met at the airport and brought to the center by our private taxista. Here are directions for others interested in finding the center:
- Take a bus (2 soles) or a taxi (15 soles) to kilometer marker 14. This is at the beginning of the pueblo named Varillal (pronounced 'barijal'). Just at the marker, there is a bus stop and a dirt road on the right. Several signs are on the far side of the dirt road, one of which is for Espiritu de Anaconda.
- Go down the dirt road for 2.6 kilometers. There will be one fork in the road. Keep to the right.
- You will go past an entrance to Espiritu de Anaconda, a large metal and concrete gate with guards on the right side of the road.
- 100 meters past the gate, down a hill, there will be a small road on the left, just before a lake. Turn left and continue to the gate of the Hummingbird Center.
